How Members of the Maryland Court of Appeals are Selected:

Appointment, Legislative Confirmation, Retention Election

The governor appoints a judge from the governor-appointed Maryland Judicial Nominating Commission’s shortlist, who must then be confirmed by the Maryland State Senate to serve a one-year term. Judges then face a retention election during the next statewide general election to serve a 10-year term.
