Justices are selected and re-selected in nonpartisan elections to eight-year terms by voters in the region that their seat represents. Interim selections to fill vacancies that occur between elections are made by governor appointment from a list prepared by the Kentucky Judicial Nominating Commission, which consists of members elected by members of the Kentucky Bar Association.
